The Squero

The Squero is a boatyard dating back to the 17th century and one of the last yards still in operation in Venice. Entering this highly suggestive place is like stepping back in time to another day and age, far from the hustle and bustle of today’s Venice.

In the Squero, the shipwrights still build gondolas, the most characteristic of the Venetian boats and one of the most iconic symbols of Venice. It takes about two months’ work, strictly by hand, to make a gondola: the boats are moved manually and worked without the support of blueprints or drawings, only with the help of traditional tools, water and fire.
